The collection contains materials relating to the establishment, administration and cessation of the A.S.T.P program at Rhode Island State College and includes: curriculum, course evaluations, costs and housing arrangements; U.S. War Department circular releases; contracts and data sheets; daily bulletins; AZTAP, the program's yearbook; commencement program; correspondence between college administrators and various military and civilian officials; and correspondence of parents of some A.S.T.P. graduates. Principal correspondents include Rhode Island State College president Carl Woodward and Maj. George W. Gage, commandant of the Kingston unit.

Carl C. Woodward was born on July 20, 1890 in Tennant, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University as an undergraduate from 1910-1914, earned a Master's degree from Rutgers in 1919, and a Ph.D. from Cornell in 1926. From 1920-1926 he taught English at Rutgers, and in 1928, he was promoted to assistant to the president of the university. He remained in this position until President Robert C. Unit 3900 of the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) was established by the War Department at Oregon State College in March 1943. The program provided training for high grade technicians and specialists needed by the Army for the war effort. Most of the instruction was provided by regular Oregon State College faculty; E.B.
